Carly Brasseux // August 16

What do you have to know about safely handling a firearm? What are the 10 Commandments of gun safety? Safety is literally the most important aspect of any and all firearms.

In this post I cover basic firearm and gun safety, thanks to my recent refresher at the Lazy CK Ranch’s Future Hunters Camp. Interested in learning more? Email Carly Brasseux at carly {at} misspursuit {dot} com.

gun safety

A firearm is an inert object that cannot be trained. It only becomes dangerous when we add a person. Don’t play with guns. Always follow the rules. Guns can kill and you don’t always get a second chance for safety.

Basic gun safety can be covered with these 10 Commandments.

  1. Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Always.
  2. Store ammunition and firearms separately. Always.
  3. Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms. Always.
  4. Learn your gun – know the proper mechanics and handling features of the gun you are using. Always.
  5. Be certain of your target, your line of fire, and what is beyond your target. Always.
  6. Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it. Always.
  7. Never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy or kill. Treat every gun as if it’s loaded. Always.
  8. Be sure to open and free the barrel of any obstructions prior to loading or shooting. Always.
  9. Use the right ammunition for your gun. Always.
  10. Be aware of your surroundings as to not trip or lose your balance. Always.
