Florida may be known for its amusement parks and affinity for hurricanes but it is also an incredible place to get outdoors! With over 175 state parks, practically anywhere you turn you can play with nature. There’s a super top secret coming your way, however. Nestled on Anastasia Island is one of Florida’s top state parks: Anastasia State Park.
Here's why you should visit Anastasia State Park:
With over 1,600 acres, Anastasia State Park is known for its wildlife, beauty, and (drumroll, please) beaches. Yes, that is correct. What it lacks in strenuous mountain hikes, it makes up for in miles of pristine sandy beaches, marshes, and sand dunes.
Fun wildlife is also a given when going to Anastasia State Park.
Fun wildlife is also a given when going to Anastasia State Park. Be on the lookout for dolphins and manatees off the coast as well as fish, crabs, and different types of turtles. As part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, it’s a huge attraction for birders everywhere who come to see many different endangered species of birds including Terns, Wilson plovers, and Black Skimmers. Maybe the endangered Anastasia beach mouse will pay you a visit as well while you are there.
Make awesome memories at the park by having a picnic, bird watching, partaking in some park education, or a kayak.
Camping out is another must at the park. Spend some time gazing at the stars. Make sure you book early to get in there. Of course, you can also always enjoy the water and make sandcastles or swim in the ocean. Just make sure to smooth out the sand for our turtle friends. P.S. Turtle season is May 1st through October. Be mindful to pick up trash and remember… no lights at night. Regardless of when you visit, pack in/out and be mindful to leave the park better than you found it.
Another perk of Anastasia State Park is its stellar location.
St. Augustine is a top place to visit in the United States. After you get done spending the day enjoying all the park has to offer, hop next door to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and catch a live show. The vibes are always the best there and it’s so close so why not. Into history? Then there's no better place than the oldest city in America. Enjoy the riches of the city by hip-hopping through the Castillo de San Marcos Fort, Fort Mose, or Fort Matanzas (do you see a theme here?). A bus or walking tour of the city is a great time. Make sure you dip into some of the fun eclectic restaurants along the way.
Just go to Anastasia State Park, you’ll love it!
And after you do, maybe decide you want to keep the park and festivities amazingly awesome by supporting the Friends of Anastasia group of volunteers and becoming a member or contributing to the turtle program. Conservation of these creatures is a must.
