Way up yonder in Michigan is a place called Traverse City. A well-kept secret to most, it should be known more widely for its proximity to beautiful outdoor adventures and its delicious wine.
If you are thinking about a trip up North, add Traverse City to your list. Let’s find out why.
No doubt after long travels, you will be up for food and drinks. Hit the high life in the Front Street area by popping into Little Bohemia, Northpeak Brewing, or Coin Slot. Wander down side streets and perhaps wander into Low Bar or The Parlor. Little Fleet is a cute food truck area that is definitely worth a stop. If you are staying a little further out, The Village at Grand Traverse Commons is an 1800s hospital turned new age shopping at eating.
Traverse City has something for everyone and is a great way to spend a long weekend with your favorite people.
Staying within Traverse City “proper” lends itself to easy walks to Clinch Park right on Lake Michigan, where you can do fun water activities such as kayaking, sailing, or SUP. Traverse City boasts a summertime cherry festival that is a must-see. While Uber and Lyft are an option, a car is a great addition to your trip so that you can enjoy wonderful outdoor adventures a bit further out, including Sleeping Bear Dunes. The dunes are a hiker's fantasy with the famous “Dune Climb,” or Heritage trail that takes you past 19th-century farms. The dunes have everything, including trails that move from forest to beach. Who doesn’t love a good hike, turn swim in chilly Lake Michigan? If you are into scenic drives, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive may just be your trip highlight. Since you will work up your appetite in the outdoors, don’t forget to hit up Tandem Ciders or Moomers on your way back into the city (it was voted the best ice cream in the whole state).

The fun does not stop there, however, as the Old Mission Peninsula area boasts both great views and good times. Visit lavender and flower farms on your way to or from Mission Point lighthouse, or thread in while you enjoy various wineries. A tour is a great option; however, some hot spots include Chateau Chantal, Brys Estate, or Chateau Grand Traverse. Be careful, though, if you decide to Uber in the off-season, it can be difficult to find a lift off the peninsula.
