Planning a Big Outdoor Trip? Take Care of the Essentials Before Heading out into the Wilderness

If you are a lover of the outdoors (and all of us should be), you know that getting away from it all is what life is really all about: the ability to put your daily worries behind you, venture out, and become one with nature.

Before you blast out into the wilderness with abandon, though, there are several logistical things that you need to take care of. As fabulous as the outdoors can be, it can also be a nightmare if you don’t go prepared. Many among us started out without sufficient knowledge of how to handle the outdoors and had to learn lessons the hard way.

Planning your trip

There are a couple major components to ensuring a great trip every time. One has to do with timing your logistics, and the other involves knowing what to bring. As far as your overall planning is concerned, remember these major points:

  • Get your flight planned first. Unless you know for sure that you can get to your destination when you want, you won’t have any reason to plan the rest. So make sure you get your flight pinned down several months in advance. And do yourself the favor of getting an airport transfer before you arrive. Whatever hotel will be your jumping off point, you will want to get a good rest before you start your adventure. A successful trip to Baden-Baden starts with the right Munich airport transfer.
  • Make sure campsites and trail permits are done. Another essential is making sure that the places you want to hike through and stay at along the way are available. Some trails require special permits and others don’t, but you need to figure this out in advance. And campsites can fill up! So make sure you don’t get stuck at the last minute and do your research well in advance of your trip.
  • Check the weather a week before you leave. Mother Nature can be unpredictable, especially with climate change increasing at a ferocious pace. Unfortunately, a sudden change in weather could make for a miserable trip if you are not careful. So keep your eye on the forecast so that you know what to expect once you arrive.
  • When packing your things, create a checklist and be sure to test your stoves, water filters, and make sure everything is completely charged. Go through it again the day before you leave to make sure you didn’t leave anything out.

What to bring

If you are a seasoned camper, you surely have a system of your own and a list of essentials that you like to have with you. But it doesn’t hurt to do a little review of the most popular items:

  • A proper navigating system. If you really want to be prepared, you should carry both digital and paper maps. You never know what will happen and whether a sudden downpour might suddenly destroy your phone. You should also be sure to download maps for when you lose your connection (which you almost certainly will out in the wilderness) and also bring a physical compass with you.
  • A headlamp. Hiking can be notoriously unpredictable. Trails that are said to take four hours can easily turn into eight if you get lost, someone in your group gets sick, etc. And trying to make your way down a mountain or through a thorny trail in the pitch dark is no fun.
  • A solid First Aid kit. This might sound like an unnecessary extra to come people, but it will be a lifesaver for you when you suddenly slip on hidden loose gravel and cut your hand open. It has happened to all of us. And having antiseptic and pain relievers on hand will keep your trip from going completely south.

Think about your individual needs

The final piece of advice that we can give is to think of your individual requirements. We all need food, water, and adequate clothing. But some of us take regular medications, have particular sun exposure or allergy concerns, etc. So we can provide basic guidelines, but it is up to you to figure out the specifics. Just remember to stay organized, start planning well in advance, and get that airport transfer from GetTransfer so that you can arrive at your campsite refreshed and ready to go.
